Dear Councillor Jackson,

Reference: Bishop’s Stortford 2020 Vision Project

Following the meeting in September with the group of young representatives from the Civic Federation, the group has been reflecting on the discussions and is deeply concerned with the lack of visible progress by your vision team to date. This project was launched in September 2007 with a promise that it would consist of "big hitters" who would make things happen.

Therefore, to bring some impetus to the project and to set down some clear requirements for the future of the town before it’s too late to influence potential developments, we have prepared our own vision document which is attached.

This document has been prepared after considerable consultation with our peers and the local communities represented by the Civic Federation, including all its committee members.

We are confident that the vision statements set out in this document represent the future aims and aspirations of the people of Bishop’s Stortford and, as such, they should be enshrined as the blueprint against which all future developments must use as the primary reference point. Also, our vision document should be supported by the conservation and historic buildings documents.

Please note that at this stage we have not prepared an implementation plan, or prioritised any of the statements, because we are not in possession of all the relevant data. However, it can be seen from the document that there are a number of items which require to be actioned urgently, for example secondary school places and the future of the Causeway Site.

In addition, we suggest that EHDC should hold a special Community Voice meeting at which our vision for the town can be presented to the public as the way forward and to seek their feedback on priorities. This should be an ongoing initiative with regular progress reports on achievements of the implementation plan so that the public are constantly engaged with the plans for the future of our town.

Finally, we would be grateful if you could please circulate this letter and our vision document to the other members of the 2020 Vision committee.

Yours sincerely,

For and on behalf of the Bishop’s Stortford Civic Federation
