Millers Bridge Enlarge
|Head of Development Control
East Herts Council
|25 January 2007|
I am writing to you in connection with the application by EHDC to demolish this bridge.
As the note supporting the application indicates, this is a valued crossing of the River Stort which is particularly useful in providing pedestrian access to the railway station for residents living to the west of the river. We welcome the intention of the Council to replace the bridge with one with ramps to improve accessibility.
However, the proposed replacement appears to be no more than an intention at present. It is not clear from the application whether it would be in the same or a different location and how it would relate to the proposed redevelopment of the goods yard site for which as yet not even an outline planning application has been made. In these circumstances we must object to this application since an important pedestrian link would be severed with no guarantee as to how and when, if at all, it would be replaced.
If, notwithstanding our objection, the Council is minded to grant consent, could I suggest that it is subject to the condition that the consent is not exercised until the design and location of a replacement facility have been agreed with the local planning authority, and that a date for its construction has been firmly committed by whichever organisation is responsible for its provision.JOHN RHODES
